Fellow’s Profile
Alan Ward
History and development of letter forms
Biography
I have a studio and workshop inside Lancaster Castle where I hold classes and complete sculptural commissions.
My Fellowship was about lettering and I researched the development of our letters from Roman times, spending time in Rome and Pietrasanta carving marble. My research enabled me to give my students a more in-depth knowledge of calligraphy and letter carving and allowed me to develop my practice. As a result of the Fellowship my profile was raised and more and more commissions came my way.
The Fellowship has been a springboard for me and allowed me to encourage others to enjoy the wonderful world of letters.
