Community support after disasters
I work independently specialising in psycho-social aspects of major incidents, emergency planning and disaster management. I provide research, training and professional advice to organisations addressing humanitarian impacts and needs of people following disasters.
My 2006 Fellowship focused on Community Support after Disasters, including psycho-social support strategies, the establishment of family and humanitarian assistance centres following disasters, and the value of peer and family support groups. My continuing interest in in this field reflects my personal and professional experiences as a disaster survivor (Hillsborough 1989) and member of Disaster Action (a charity with direct collective experience of over 30 disasters), as an academic passionate about evidence-based best practice, and as a practitioner experienced in providing various UK post-disaster support networks and services.
My Fellowship gave me the opportunity to meet many inspirational people in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Through the Fellowship networks and connections made then and since, I can continue paying forward in the service of those impacted by collective tragedy and those who help them.
