I have been active in dissemination of small-scale renewable energy technologies for many years, mainly as an academic but also as an engineering designer. I took early retirement from lecturing in engineering at the University of Nottingham. Among other activities, I ran a Master's in sustainable energy engineering, which I was largely responsible for setting up.

My Fellowship was about renewable energy, specifically looking at the potential for development of small hydropower in Guyana. I undertook the Fellowship just after completing a PhD in this field, with support and encouragement from an expat Guyanese who was then living in London. If implemented in the right way, this technology can bring the benefits of electricity to remote communities in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

Since then I have continued to work in this field, including carrying out research projects in collaboration with organisations such as Practical Action, and writing part of a book with Engineers Without Borders. One of the schemes that I identified while in Guyana was subsequently implemented with support from the Guyanese Government.
