Biography
I am now retired but undertake a couple of roles related to mental health, as assistant Mental Health Act manager and a trustee on the board of a charity.
My Fellowship was concerned with exploring and understanding the issues surrounding the WHO Safe Motherhood Initiative during the 1980s and 1990s as a basis for an educational module on understanding and learning about birth around the world.
The International Midwifery programme was developed to expose student midwives to the culture and experience of childbirth globally. I travelled throughout Ghana and Malawi undertaking a study into maternal and child health, working with staff at every level from government officials to those living and working in villages. I ran workshops for groups from the Ministries of Health, regional directors and in schools of health, nursing and midwifery in both countries. As well as undertaking the research, I presented 12 papers on different aspects of health care, health service delivery and current practice in the UK. I published Childbirth in the Global Village (2003) as an outcome of my Fellowship and my doctoral studies.
