Biography

I am the founder and director of the charitable trust PRSSV Institute of Performing Arts and Heritage. Having trained in Western music, I became an ethnomusicologist specialising in Indian music.

My Fellowship in 1980 was for Indian drumming and related arts, and I did extensive research on how music and dance were examined in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

In 1989, I founded PRSSV and the knowledge I gained during my Fellowship helped me to develop a leading and unique organisation which provides access to accredited qualifications for students of oral traditions including steel pan, tabla, sitar, kathak, Bollywood, bouzouki, djembe, and more. PRSSV also offers advocacy work supporting diversity in music and dance education, Indian music and dance classes, concerts and events, and teacher- and examiner training courses. We provide heritage skills courses too, and heritage projects, including physical and digital archives and touring multi-media exhibitions.

I continue to work with the contacts I made while on my Fellowship as well as their children and grandchildren, and the work I began over 30 years ago has become increasingly more relevant to the needs of our diverse society.
