Biography

I am a trustee and former chair of Palliative Care Works, which I founded in 2009. The charity provides training and mentoring in palliative care and has worked in Tanzania, Ghana, Ethiopia, Palestine, Zambia, Kenya and elsewhere.

My Fellowship was focused on the impact of palliative care training on day-to-day practice in sub-Saharan Africa, and on the support offered to families facing bereavement. As a practitioner in a Macmillan team supporting children facing parental bereavement, and a member of a university team delivering an innovative palliative care diploma in Africa, I wanted to explore the impact of our teaching on services in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Since undertaking the Fellowship, I have completed my PhD, founded a charity to deliver training and have published a number of articles. Many of the students from courses delivered by myself and other colleagues from Palliative Care Works have gone on to play leading roles in their own countries' services and associations. The Fellowship was a wonderful opportunity to learn from passionate champions of palliative care in Africa.
