Biography
Harvey Tweats is a Director of Celtic Rewilding Ltd (CR), an environmental consultancy specialised in species reintroductions and rewilding project development and implementation. While based in Leek, Staffordshire, UK, Harvey and CR work internationally, with country estates, farms, NGOs, zoological collections and media companies. Harvey has also served as the Wildlife Development Lead at the Trentham Estate along with numerous other positions across organisations the length and breadth of the country. He has aided in the reintroduction of invertebrates, herptiles, beavers, water voles, feral cattle and wild horses. In 2024, Harvey was awarded a Churchill Fellowship.
My Fellowship will help address the biodiversity crisis, especially in the UK, which is one of the most nature-depleted countries on earth. Reintroductions are an increasingly useful tool to restore biodiversity and my Fellowship will focus on the forgotten frogs of Britain's wetlands: the agile, moor and European tree frog. Frogs and amphibians have always fascinated me, ever since I began catching them from my grandmother's pond at the age of three. Yet amphibians remain one of the most extinction-prone groups of organisms, so we must look for solutions to address these declines. I am hopeful that my Fellowship will lead to vastly more wetland restoration projects and reintroduction of the cacophony of lost frogs into these wetlands.
