Biography

I am an archaeologist (field director, retired).

My Fellowship was the continued excavation of Theban Tomb KV 39 by utilising the expertise of a team of specialists. This involved further investigation and clearance, on-site studies of skeletal and organic materials, a survey and plan of the tomb, and analysis and photography of the finds for publication (The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology, Volume 91, 2005).

A colleague, Dr John Rose, had suffered a severe stroke and I was invited to fulfil the role of field director. This enabled me to realise my boyhood dream, make a major contribution in the world of archaeology and continue the life's work of a stricken colleague. I was able to embark on this challenging excavation in that most enigmatic place, the Valley of The Kings. As an 'explorer Fellow' I have striven to make archaeology more accessible to others.

Through the financial support of the Fellowship, important real-life experiences as an explorer in a remote part of the world have been passed on to students, colleagues and friends from all walks of life. I can truly say that my profession was enhanced by my experiences and travel overseas. I have been delighted to spread the word regarding the wider message on the aims of the Fellowship.
