Biography
I completed my Fellowship in 1990 and am now retired. The main topic was linking the UK Duke of Edinburgh's (DofE) Award with New Zealand. We were the first group to fly out under Prince Edward's Pegasus Project linking DofE with Commonwealth countries.
I led a group of young people who completed their DofE Gold Exploration and Residential Project on the North Island of New Zealand. When we were not doing the DofE specialist activities, we stayed in the homes of New Zealand families. I enabled young people to tour the North Island, covering many areas of interest. At that time my own children were too young to do their DofE Award but when they became old enough I led further groups with young people of their age, and in total I led four trips to New Zealand, as well as hosting New Zealand DofE young people here in the UK.
Prince Edward came to Heathrow Airport to see us off and invited me to be his guest speaker at St James's Palace on my return, speaking the first time about our outward trip, and the second time speaking about hosting the return group from New Zealand to the UK to complete their Gold Award. Growing up in the East End, Sir Winston Churchill was a hero of mine, so I felt very honoured to become a Fellow.
