A former university lecturer (Environmental Philosophy at Lancaster University, then Outdoor Studies at the University of Cumbria), I now work freelance as a writer and environmental activist. I'm passionate about using adventurous journeys to raise awareness and inspire action on our most urgent environmental challenges. My first 'adventure plus' journey, The Carbon Cycle, was a bike ride from Texas to Alaska following the spine of the Rockies and exploring climate change. It was the subject of my Fellowship and resulted in a long-running slide show and eponymous book, shortlisted for the Banff Mountain Festival adventure travel book award, 2012. My latest project, The Life Cycle, involved cycling the length of the Andes on a bamboo bike I built myself. The environmental focus of this project is biodiversity loss, an environmental challenge every bit as serious as climate change but one that gets a lot less press. The aim of The Life Cycle is to help change this – and to link inspiration to action via a talk series and a forthcoming book, due to be published by Icon Books in March 2023. I also run occasional Outdoor Philosophy courses, harnessing the power of wild places to inspire and reconnect.
