Biography
I was awarded my Fellowship in 1987 when I was Director of Sport, Exercise and Health at the University of Bristol. For my Fellowship I went to the USA to find out more about the developing world of exercise for health, as opposed to sport-related exercise. This ultimately led to me establishing the UK's first master's programme in exercise and health science.
My other work-related interests remained in sport. I was a staff coach of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Rugby Football Union (RFU), coaching England Students Rugby XV and Bristol Rugby within my coaching career. I remain the President of the Students RFU.
I was the Minister's nominee on the South West Sports Council for many years, and was very involved in rugby administration, becoming eventually the President of the Rugby Football Union.
On retirement from Bristol University I set up a charity, the Foundation for Leadership through Sport (https://www.flsport.net) which occupies much of my time to this day. I organise workshops and conferences on related areas, and also offer programmes on 'learning to be a leader' to schools.
