Biography

I am a retired consultant forensic psychiatrist and currently the Medical Deputy President of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales.

The purpose of my Fellowship was to learn more about the assessment and treatment of sex offenders in North America, concentrating my visits on a spectrum of services and facilities in Canada. The bulk of research in this area emanated from North America. I was involved in the development of forensic psychiatric services for people with learning disabilities and needed to understand assessment and treatment approaches for mainstream offenders in order to modify them as appropriate for people with impaired cognitive functioning.

I was able to apply this area of enhanced knowledge to my clinical work to improve services for people with intellectual disability. The Fellowship afforded me the unique opportunity to better understand this challenging and complex area and to improve my skills in the assessment and treatment of sex offenders, therefore contributing to the enhanced safety of the public.
