Smart employment practices for older people
I live a multi-hyphenated life as an astrologer, technologist, writer and author.
The focus of my Fellowship was about exploring the lifestyle choices and work opportunities for the over-50s in China. I took a contrasting perspective between the UK and China around how older people are positioned in society.
I value the ageing process. Yet there's a lack of visibility or celebration of older people and the value we add in Western societies. I wanted to examine and explore positive representations, particularly as it's a phase of life we'll all go through. At the time of my Fellowship in 2007 I was 43 and I live with as much vitality, curiosity and engagement now as I did then.
I have coached over-50s on how to reinvent themselves to live more expansive and enriching lives. I launched the first iteration of The Smart Years Podcast. It focused specifically on older women who want to reposition themselves in a technologically driven world.
To a large extent, older people remain invisible in social, economic, political and cultural contexts. This is borne out by the Doddery but Dear? research report published by the Centre for Ageing Better in 2020.
