Biography
I am an architect and town planner. I worked most of my career in local government in London and Bath. My 1999 Fellowship looked at the presentation of UNESCO World Heritage in 16 urban sites across western Europe. Some sites were the historic centre of old towns and some were significant palaces. The journey visited three Nordic countries, three German-speaking countries and four sites in Spain.
Presentation of the heritage values of a World Heritage Site is an obligation on each State Party. The journey concluded that none of the States Parties had legislation or guidance addressing presentation or education of values of their World Heritage Sites. Presentation would assist in preparing a management vision for a property. The cultural identity of the creators of a heritage site would be reinforced and sustained with effective presentation.
Following the Fellowship, I have worked as a consultant for clients with World Heritage properties and nominations for a site to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. I have undertaken missions to assess the state of conservation of some sites and assessed nominations to be included on the World Heritage List.
