The use of music therapy in secondary schools
I am a secondary music teacher with an interest in using music as a therapeutic tool with the pupils in my school. In the USA music therapy is used in a wider variety of settings than the UK, including in mainstream schools. I travelled to Dallas, Texas to observe and work with music therapists there. Whilst in Dallas I was fortunate to work with music therapists in a variety of schools but also in hospitals, advocacy centres and community groups. I learned not only about music therapy principles and activities, but also developed my use of improvising and percussion in group music-making. I am still in touch with the professionals I met; they have now become friends and continue to support my music-making endeavours. On my return to the UK I was able to incorporate the activities I had learned into group wellbeing sessions for our pupils. I supported a group of pupils through bereavement when one of our pupils passed away, which was something I could never have foreseen doing before my Fellowship. I am now an assistant headteacher but music is still an essential part of my life. My Fellowship has taught me to grasp every opportunity as you never know where it will lead.
