Biography

I research outdoor learning, in particular in relation to older people. I am a Duke of Edinburgh's Award Expedition Assessor and a photographer.

The main topic of my Fellowship was making connections with nature. As an outdoor educator and youth and community worker, I am particularly interested in why certain groups do not connect with nature, for example women, people who are ageing, or people with a disability. I am also interested in how a connection with the outdoors and a sense of belonging to nature shapes people's lives. I hope to dispel some of the myths about what it means to be an 'outdoor person', suggesting that being an outdoor person does not necessarily mean climbing to the top of a mountain. As a photographer and journal writer, I am keen to encourage a creative connection with nature.

Since completing my Fellowship, I have become an active member of the Institute for Outdoor Learning and the European Institute for Outdoor Adventure Education and Experiential Learning (EOE Network). I have made presentations, run workshops and written articles, papers and chapters in books, and taken a range of photographs.

The Fellowship has given my work validity. It has given me the confidence to develop my ideas.
