Cross-cultural lessons on parental involvement in education
Encouraging parental involvement in children's education by learning from varied cultural approaches
2010
East of England
I am a proud 2010 Fellow who visited the USA and Hong Kong to learn more about two different academic approaches (Eastern and Western) to parental involvement in the success of children's education. I was very active in the community in this area and had anecdotal evidence about the importance of parental involvement, but wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the academic research in this field.
I chose to visit two leading academics and learn more about their research. On my return, I shared my findings with university academics, community groups, teachers and parents. I have continued to work with parents and children, sharing tools to help them help their children succeed. The impact it has brought is empowerment to parents and their children. The Fellowship has enriched my life and offered me a unique opportunity to gain new insights and perspectives, and to enrich my community. It has equipped me to be a lifelong volunteer.
