Biography
I am currently Chair of the Society for Companion Animal Studies (SCAS), a charity whose members study human–animal interactions, Vice-President of the International Association of Human–Animal Interaction Organisations, and Vice-President of Canine Partners. I am also a Trustee for Our Special Friends, and an adviser for Fostering Compassion.
My Fellowship allowed me to visit human–animal bond programmes throughout the United States. It facilitated the expansion of my veterinary outreach activities which include introducing animal care programmes to social care institutions and teaching humane education in schools. I visited prisons in the United States and later throughout the UK to learn about animals in offender rehabilitation.
I co-founded Canine Partners, the UK assistance dog programme in which highly trained dogs are partnered with people with severe disabilities to bring greater independence. In total, 901 partnerships have now been created. Client support services in my veterinary practice were extended to include behaviour modification and bereavement support. I share my knowledge by lecturing, broadcasting and via peer-reviewed journals.
I have won the William McCulloch Award for Excellence, and Veterinarian of the Year 2021.
