Biography
I was appointed as a Commissioner with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) in 2019 and most recently worked at The Junction, a peace building organisation that specialises in storytelling, ethical and shared remembering and peace education. Currently, I develop and facilitate community education programmes based on cultural heritage, global justice and embodied learning.
This Fellowship will inform the content and methodology of education programmes by exploring approaches to education that connect with place, language and health.
For the last couple of years, I have been involved in a personal process of restoring connections to the natural world and cultural heritage. In parallel I have been applying tools of critical literacy to train teachers in gaining a better understanding of global development and justice and systemic colonial legacies. I anticipate that the knowledge and skills shared in Hawaii, in this comparable context, will benefit both my role as an educator and activist as well as inform the development of curricula within a range of education sectors to empower people in Northern Ireland as agents of change.
