Biography

My Fellowship took me to see how North American institutions were using technology to share educational resources, all long before the internet. But other highlights included riding on a rollercoaster with a nun (there were always nuns in educational meetings) and watching Nixon being elected (with an appalled Democrat friend).

I continued to work on sharing educational resources, across barriers, for disadvantaged learners, between countries. This was a common theme from my work at the International Extension College, to ten years at the Commonwealth Secretariat (where we established the Commonwealth of Learning, designed to share Commonwealth educational resources), to my work as Educational Planner for Distance Education at the University of the West Indies. For seven years I served on the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, concerned with getting able overseas scholars to British universities.

Later I had time to write books on educational history: Learning Abroad, on the history of Commonwealth scholarships, led me to go on and publish A History of Foreign Students in Britain, and International Students 1860-2010: Policy and Practice round the World.
