Information literacy via distance education
Biography
My current role is as a senior library manager at the Open University (OU) and I specialise in digital skills development. My Fellowship in 2001 was about information literacy – the skills people need to find, use and evaluate information, and I went to Australia to talk to colleagues working in that area, as they were very much leading the field.
The ideas I brought back enabled me to establish a team within our library service focusing on skills teaching and since then we have embedded the skills into our policies, strategies and teaching activities. This ensures that our students leave the university with the necessary digital capabilities, ready for life or work.
I've edited three books for Facet publishing on this topic and spoken at international conferences. I'm presently working towards surfacing digital capabilities in initiatives within the OU – for example, combating digital poverty and supporting inclusion and accessibility.
