I am Associate Director, Community Health and Social Care, States of Guernsey. I have been a nurse for over 30 years and became a Queen's Nurse in 2015. I was born in Scotland and moved to Guernsey 1989, where I married Colin. We have two adult kids, three cockapoos and a three-legged cat. I enjoy island life and gardening, which feeds body and soul.
Working in community care is a privilege. It is highly complex and rewarding work where the focus should be multidimensional wellness. I became interested in what attention is paid to individual meaning and purpose, and the role that systems play in population health and wellbeing.
During my travels, I found that high-performing organisations build relationships and connections with their communities, which translates into better health outcomes. I found evidence informed systems thinking that showed it is possible to do things differently – it's all about relationships.
My Fellowship had a profound impact on me personally. I learned more about myself than I expected. I am a better person and a better leader. Professionally, I have influenced change at team and system level. The learning doesn't stop when you submit your Fellow's Report. Maybe a book next?
