Biography
I currently work for Derby City Council as Team Leader of Digital and Web. My career in IT started back in the early 1990s in traffic and transport, specifically traffic control and information systems.
It was this part of my career (and a general interest in digital information systems) that led me to successfully apply for a Fellowship in 2000. My aim was to garner knowledge and insights from worldwide experts in traveller information systems. At the time the world leaders – the innovators – could be found in, among other places, Sweden, the USA and Japan. I chose to visit multiple cities across the United States and was lucky enough to be able to hook up with all of the key contacts (people and organisations) that I researched. The Sweden leg of my Fellowship focused solely on the GOTIC transit project. This was based in Gothenburg and focused on perfecting predicted transit arrival times across the city-wide public transport network.
My Fellowship experiences and Fellow's Report were communicated widely and several recommendations were made about improving the information systems of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, my then local area, with a view to achieving a reduction in commuting car use.
