Ceramic art in architecture
Biography
As an artist and cartographer I have been making maps from clay for over 30 years. Travel and maps remain my primary influences.
My Fellowship was in 1996 and I travelled through Spain, the USA and Mexico, collecting images of architectural ceramics and stories from contemporary makers. My journey studied the use of studio ceramics in public art and architecture. I also drew inspiration from the landscape and maps on my voyage for my solo show Road Works. In 2000 I was commissioned to create a public artwork for the Bellenden Regeneration Project in Peckham, and designed and made a cafe terrace as an interactive local map.
I have continued my connection with architectural ceramics. In 2018 I made ceramic architectural models and provided glaze consultation for Metropolitan Architects for a glazed tower of affordable housing in Wandsworth.
My other studio practice, The Little Globe Co, is inspired by 18th-century pocket globes, creating palm-sized porcelain globes which focus on highly detailed relief topography. My work has been purchased by the National Maritime Museum and the Museum of London and is in private collections worldwide.
