Specialised techniques of deaf theatre
Biography
I am currently an associate director with White Horse Theatre, an educational theatre company, touring plays in the English language to schools throughout Germany and neighbouring countries.
The main topic of my Fellowship was to study the techniques of sign language theatre, with the National Theatre of the Deaf in the United States. At the time I was running a community-based theatre company in London, integrating deaf, hearing impaired and hearing performers. As a professional theatre director, I was fascinated by the fusion of sign language with the spoken word as an artistic mode of communication.
On my return to the UK, I founded Show of Hands Theatre to develop the learning I had undertaken on my Fellowship. With support from the then Arts Council of Great Britain, the company gave opportunities to many young deaf and hearing impaired performers to bring classical plays to a diverse audience, who otherwise may not have had access to them. The company was a forerunner for many companies now working with integrated casts in sign language and the spoken word.
The Fellowship personally provided me with an opportunity to explore a unique and rewarding artistic form.
