Biography
I manage HOOK Training Ltd, a company devoted to helping informal educators in visitor attractions and outreach organisations engage their learners.
My Fellowship explored how science outreach providers in the north-eastern states of the USA engage and excite school audiences with their interactive demonstration shows. This gave me the invaluable opportunity to learn from educators who were fulfilling my role in my outreach company in Northern Ireland.
This experience played a crucial part in so much of my work as an informal educator, enriching my professional development work with science communicators in the UK and internationally. My PhD research showed how these emotional engagement techniques could also be used by classroom science teachers.
I decided someone should really write a book that curates as many of these hooks as possible to help other informal educators. I'm delighted to say that book – Hook Your Audience – is due to be published in 2021.
