Biography

My main employment is as a caretaker for a local restaurant. I still illustrate, write sci-fi and occasionally, also do leatherwork jobs.

My Fellowship was concerned with mountain rescue equipment. I set out to upgrade and improve casualty packaging by limiting the amount of casualty movement during transit. It was a great time doing something I loved and cared about and I would jump back into this line of work given the opportunity. I am still involved in mountain rescue work and have been a volunteer since 1984. Improving antiquated kit was very much a goal, one in which I found full placement in Yosemite Search and Rescue Team where I managed to test a prototype Secure Casualty System (SCS) in very demanding, steep conditions. I also visited Iceland and trained with International Search and Rescue (ISAR) along with 12 other Scottish mountain rescue teams and some English and Welsh teams. The SCS was manufactured by Snowsled Polar and has been used effectively by many UK steep-ground rescue teams.

Sadly, my daughter's death in a road traffic accident and the closure of Snowsled Polar marked the end of this wonderful period of doing work that was both rewarding and practically effective in assisting injured people on our hills.
