Biography
My Churchill Fellowship in 1993 enabled me to travel to France, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark in order to find out whether there was a need for resources and support for families who had children with bedwetting problems. I also investigated whether the resources set up by the UK charity Enuresis Resource and Information Centre (ERIC) might be usefully translated.
My background is in nursing and social work, and I set up ERIC in 1987. We published the first leaflets for parents, set up a helpline service, wrote the first treatment manuals for professionals and organised the first national conference. Meeting nurses and doctors in Europe caused considerable interest in ERIC and its resources, and stimulated other countries to set up their own resources. There was less interest in 'mini-ERICs' being established from the UK.
I retired from ERIC in 2008 and handed over the charity (now renamed ERIC, The Children's Bowel and Bladder Charity) to a new director. I was awarded an Honorary DSci from the University of Bristol in 2007 and an MBE in 2008. I remain a Patron of ERIC.
