Biography

I am Vice-Chancellor of the Royal Agricultural University. My 1997 Fellowship focused on Managing the Changing Face of University Teaching. Universities have experienced a level of change over the last generation that is unprecedented in their 900-year history. And like others in the public and commercial sector, they face a common dilemma: how to do more (teach more students) with less (fewer resources) while simultaneously maintaining quality.

I visited university innovators in the USA and Australia who were successful in doing just that.

My Fellowship research provided the basis of my international best-selling practitioner guide – The Higher Education Manager's Handbook: Effective Leadership and Management in Universities and Colleges (Routledge, 3rd edition, 2018) – the very first of its kind in the HE sector. It has helped shape and inform university leadership and management development throughout the UK and beyond, including that of pioneering the first world-class, online programme with global reach.
