Biography
Aged 80, I am now entirely retired. I left school at 16 to become an apprentice reporter. I spent 15 years not only as a local reporter and columnist, but also deeply involved in community action, helping to found a race relations council and neighbourhood associations.
Fellowships in 1971 were interested in the imminent reorganisation of local government. My Fellowship was about relations between the new authorities and their communities, by studying such activities in Australia and New Zealand.
On my return I continued my community activities but also became head of public relations for the Association of Metropolitan Authorities for 23 years and an office holder in the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and its local government committee. For this I was awarded an MBE in 1998. I retired from paid employment that year, went to university, gained a PhD and continued to serve as a trustee and committee member of various bodies.
The Fellowship totally transformed my life.
