Biography

I'm a Churchill Fellow from 2016, when I travelled to India and South Korea to research creative approaches to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning. I continue my writing and volunteering for Nottingham education charity Ignite!, which I founded in 2003.

My Fellowship included observations and conclusions drawn from my journeys in Asia but also time spent in Finland and Ghana, where I introduced a school-based science lab (Lab_13) where the topics for investigation are determined by the curiosity of children.

I continue to explore what learning can be stimulated, generated and inspired when curiosity, creativity and community coincide, and I have written two books of essays in what I plan to be a series: The A-Z of Creativity and The A-Z of Curiosity (the latter while I was a writer in residence in Koli, Finland in October 2019).

As a result of my Fellowship I have continued to promote opportunities for creative STEM learning notably through Ignite! projects, and the Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity. I am especially interested in ways of introducing STEM concepts to infants through their innate curiosity and appetite for play.

I draw on my Fellowship as constant motivation.
