Biography

I am the Development Director of WildLand, Scotland (rewilding in the Cairngorms and Sutherland).

My 1991 Fellowship, on planning and access arrangements in US national parks, was of huge relevance and benefit, anticipating legislation in Scotland such as the National Parks Act 2000 and the Land Reform Act 2003.

I spent 42 years a town and country planner in Glasgow City, the Grampian region and then Aberdeen (latterly as Director of Planning). I was a founding member of Scottish Wildlife and Countryside LINK in 1987 (now Scottish LINK). I have been a member of the Scottish Mountaineering Club since 1988, and was their vice president from 2017 to 2019. From 1990 to 1994 I was President of the Mountaineering Council of Scotland. From 1996 to 2006 I was involved with the National Trust for Scotland's Mar Lodge Estate in the Cairngorms. As convener of Scotland's National Access Forum, I advised the Scottish Government and Scottish National Heritage on access legislation. I have also been a convener for the Royal Town Planning Institute (2012) and adviser to the Scottish Government Land Reform Review Group between 2012 and 2014.

I became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2013, and for two years after that was involved with their commission of inquiry into the housing crisis in Scotland.

I was a part-time lecturer on land economy at Aberdeen University in 2016 and made a board member of the Observatory for Sport in Scotland (OSS) in 2017.

The Churchill Fellowship has been always been there to remind me to 'put something back'.
