Biography

My 1986 Fellowship topic was Multi-ethnic Participation in Adventure Courses. I was at that time concerned that on the outdoor adventure courses I ran for The Outward Bound Trust at their Eskdale centre, we saw very few participants from black and ethnic minority backgrounds. This appeared to be widely the case in UK.

My project was to find out the reasons for this and to see if such participation could be improved. My Fellowship enabled me to visit the USA, Hong Kong and Malaysia to gain more information about this issue in these contrasting cultures.

I retired in 2001, and since then have become increasingly involved in local community activities. As Chair of the Eskdale Mill & Heritage Trust I was responsible for negotiating the acquisition of the historic water-powered Corn Mill in Eskdale and beginning the process of restoration of this complex of buildings, which has now had substantial Heritage Lottery funding for this work. I have also been much involved in political work with the Liberal Democrats, standing twice as Westminster candidate for the local constituency, and also twice as a candidate for the European Parliament.
