Biography

Roy retired from his role as Clinical Engineer and Director of Rehabilitation Engineering Services in 2002, after 29 years working with severely disabled children. His main interest was postural management, which led to his Fellowship in 1978, during which he visited centres across the USA and Canada to learn more about the techniques and materials used there and share the knowledge from his centre.

Roy said that before his Fellowship, he did not feel particularly confident but meeting many colleagues throughout the tour of North America, giving presentations about his work and the subsequent lectures and conferences in the UK have him a confidence boost. He believed it helped to establish his knowledge and skills internationally enabling him to influence various standards and decision-making meetings and conferences.

At his centre he used one of the modular seating systems kindly donated by the team in Memphis to establish their best direction of development. Roy led the design and manufacture of adjustable postural management equipment and by working with a small company specifically established for the purpose, made it available UK-wide. By doing so his Fellowship benefited himself in many ways and supported disabled children in the UK.
