Biography

I am a master craftsman, professional dry stone waller, tutor and Dry Stone Walling Association and Lantra examiner.

My Fellowship was to research the construction of dry stone buildings in both India and Norway. I had several commissions to construct dry stone buildings for clients, and wanted to research it for myself and to integrate that into teaching, sharing the knowledge and practical skills.

As progression and developments in the built environment proceed apace, I wanted to look at traditional methods of construction that were more natural and made less impact on the earth's resources, especially as many of the buildings I was researching in India were in earthquake zones.

As a result of my Fellowship I have constructed several buildings, including some with growing roofs, as well as sharing the knowledge I gained by teaching and giving illustrated talks.

The Fellowship gave me an opportunity to study, learn and share information on dry stone building construction, of which little has been documented. It also gave me the chance to put it into practice on projects, and hopefully inspire people to consider construction that works with nature and the environment.
