Biography
In my original Fellowship application in 2019 I aimed to explore teaching ethics and citizenship in Japan at all levels of education: from kindergarten to engineering programmes at university. With this visit the aim was to develop a teaching framework that imbues ethical decision making and citizenship to the Mechanical Engineering programme at Aston University, and start to establish my research in engineering ethics and a community of practice in the UK. However, since the pandemic, the travel plans have been put on hold. I have instead attended an international education virtual conference held by the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI) and joined the SEFI Ethics Special Interest Group. There I am leading a small team on policy work to explore the role of ethics in accreditation guidelines across Europe with plans to expand the work globally. This work has given me the opportunity to access a small community of educators passionate about ethical engineering that is truly global. This has led me to pivot my focus in my Fellowship and explore alternative arrangements that I am still navigating through in light of the changes brought about by the pandemic, and the months ahead.
