Timber-frame building
Biography
I run a small company specialising in traditional timber-frame carpentry. Our main activity is the conservation and repair of historic timber-framed buildings, as well as some new frames and traditional joinery.
My Fellowship to the United States was to study the craft revival of traditional timber framing. In the mid-1980s, North America had seen a renewed interest in traditional timber-frame construction, using heavy timbers and traditional carpentry to build modern energy-efficient structures.
After the experience of my Fellowship I continued running my business, using my skills and knowledge to specialise in the conservation of historic timber-framed buildings, as that is where my initial interest lay. Since my Fellowship I have trained a number of apprentices, taught at residential courses, given lectures and demonstrations, and run seminars.
I have worked on many nationally important historic buildings, conserving them for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
