Biography

I am Head of the Department of Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine at St George's, University of London, combining this with part-time appointments as an NHS Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Blackpool and Preston and Clinical Lead for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Major Trauma Network. For up to six months a year I also undertake orthopaedic education and training projects in the less developed world and have extensive experience in humanitarian surgical projects in conflict areas, including Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. I was a 2004 Churchill Fellow, visiting specialist North American centres for the treatment of Congenital Talipes Equino-Varus (CTEV, Clubfoot). Following on from the Fellowship, I have become recognised as a global expert in the condition, have established clubfoot treatment projects in many less developed countries and am Medical Director of the Global Clubfoot Initiative. I am also a lead clinician in the UK response to International Disasters and am immediate past chairman of World Orthopaedic Concern (UK).
