Biography

My Fellowship involved six months in Morocco searching for the very rare Spanish imperial eagle, checking all potential breeding sites. As I result, I declared it functionally extinct there. This was important as it encouraged young, enthusiastic conservationists in Spain to improve protection. Numbers have subsequently risen from 30 to over 300 breeding pairs.

Being a Churchill Fellow helped me gain a Harkness Fellowship to the USA where I completed a master's degree in film and became a wildlife film-maker, concentrating on conservation themes. I made over 40 TV films, working as a cameraman and writer with Sir David Attenborough and the BBC and many others. I filmed for major series like The Life of Plants and Land of the Tiger. I wrote award-winning films like Tiger Crisis and Wolf Saga, as well as over 500 articles for BBC Wildlife Magazine, New Scientist, the TLS etc. I have also written books: Nature in its Place (Bodley Head, 1988) and Tiger (BBC, 2004). I am currently working on a third book.
