I am Director for Children and Families at Children's Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS). In this role, I provide strategic leadership to the clinical and care teams delivering care services provided by CHAS. With responsibility for leading the delivery of safe, effective and person-centred care across all settings, I ensure CHAS is a part of a multi-agency approach to the care of children and their families.
My Fellowship allowed me to visit two very different children's hospice services in Poland and South Africa. In South Africa I saw how much could be done with so little. Small teams are supplemented with volunteers as in the UK, where we are lucky to have a strong volunteer tradition in our hospices. (I have supported the growth in volunteering in care delivery roles.) In Poland the homecare service was a revelation to me and has influenced my advocacy for holistic, multi-disciplinary community-based approaches for families.
Possibly the most overwhelming experience was the warmth and generosity of the people I met – from those who made the Fellowship possible, to the children, families
and staff I met along the way. People were, without fail, amazing.
