Biography

I worked for 25 years in the London borough of Hackney as a teacher and advisory teacher for IT across the curriculum, specialising in multimedia. My Churchill Fellowship in 1997 on the use of multimedia in education was supremely helpful in making contacts, developing ideas and confidence, and expanding my teaching and training. I produced the book Making Multimedia in the Classroom: A Teacher's Guide (RoutledgeFalmer, 2000). I received an MA with distinction from King's College University of London and was the Curriculum Director of the Hackney City Learning Centre for ten years.

In 2010 I left to become a historian and Yiddishist. I have a postdoctoral research position at Queen Mary University of London, researching the Jewish immigrant East End through Yiddish sources. I published Whitechapel Noise: Jewish Immigrant Life in Yiddish Song and Verse, London 1884-1914 (Wayne State University Press, 2018) and London Yiddishtown: East End Jewish Life in Yiddish Sketch and Story, 1930-1950: Selected Works of Katie Brown, AM Kaizer, and IA Lisky (Wayne State University Press, 2021). I sing and record Yiddish London songs with Klezmer Klub and Katsha'nes.
