Churchill Fellowship appoints Fellow as new trustee

“I’m really excited to be joining the board. It’s an honour to participate in Churchill’s legacy this way. When I was given a Fellowship, I just couldn’t believe something so special would happen to me. The experience changed my perspective and I want to play a part in that journey of discovery for other people” says Maria. Maria’s Fellowship took her to the USA in 2012 to explore art as a catalyst for community regeneration.

Maria’s appointment is the result of our second external recruitment process for trustees. This time we worked with Inclusive Boards who specialise in diversity and inclusion at board level. We received over 70 applications, 44% of which came from Fellows.

Of course welcoming new Trustees means we are also saying sad farewells, this time to Harry Henderson and Brian Clarke.

Harry Henderson has been a Trustee for 15 years providing great wisdom and sound council. He has been a key part of our Investment Sub-committee, chairing it since 2015, and has given very generously of his time and expertise, watching over our investments with huge care. Harry was also a committed member of the Environment category selection panel, maintaining an interest in the Fellows awarded as they went on to have an impact in their field.

Brian Clarke has given a total of 34 years to the Advisory Council and the Board of Trustees, always ensuring that the voice of the Fellow was at the centre of our decision making. He has chaired the Arts selection panel annually bringing his extraordinary knowledge of the arts, and first hand understanding of the power of a Fellowship, to every decision. His Fellowship in 1974 marked the beginning of a successful career which has influenced and shaped contemporary stained glass work and architectural artistry ever since. In 2015 Brian designed the new Churchill medallion which is presented to all Fellows on completion of their Fellowship.

We will miss them both greatly but look forward to staying in touch.
